spotted gum

Spotted Gum is an extremely adaptable and naturally strong timber which makes it ideally suited to numerous applications.

Once predominantly used only as a structural timber, considering its natural beauty and sheer strength, its not surprising Spotted Gum has found favour in many aesthetic, and architectural applications with extremely impressive results.

Because of its significant versatility and durability you will find Spotted Gum used in a wide variety of applications. From building and construction, including structural components, flooring, cladding, and decking, right through to furniture (indoor and outdoor), landscaping, boat building, poles, beams, the list goes on.

Widely used for power poles, bridge timbers and general construction, Spotted Gum is one of the most widely available recycled timbers in Australia today.

In the future this species will become more readily available from Australian hardwood plantations as a result of its growing popularity.

tree of knowledge tops the list again

On 29 October this year the Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge Memorial (Barcaldine, QLD), by Brian Hooper Architect and m3architecture, was the proud recipient of the Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage.

This significant acknowledgement represents one of Australia’s most prestigious architecture honors with 2010 representing the award’s 30th anniversary.

The Tree of Knowledge stands tall, representing a proud heritage, and a tribute to the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party. The Tree of Knowledge exemplifies a vital symbol of our nation’s political history.

Aside from its historical and political relevance, the monument is indeed a magnificent work of art. Recycled timber, provided and hand picked by Kennedy’s staff, includes over 5000 individual pieces of premium Australian hardwood, resulting in this dramatic and stunning monument.

a natural enhancement

A finish that preserves and enhances the natural character and beauty of wood, Cutek CD50 LVOC is a special version of Cutek CD50 that is manufactured to contain less than 200 grams/litre of volatile organic compounds, enabling it to be used and specified on most green projects as a solvent based coating.

Specifically, Cutek CD50 LVOC has been independently tested to ASTM 3960 and determined to contain 173 grams/litre.

Cutek CD50 LOVC was specifically used on recycled timbers employed in the fit out of the new, state of the art, Energex headquarters located in the inner city Brisbane suburb of Newstead. Chosen specifically because of the environmental sensitivity of this development, along with the enhancements provided to timber life and maintenance. (read Energex story)

Cutek CD50 LVOC is identical in appearance and performance to conventional Cutek Wood Preservative with the exception that it diffuses into the timber substrate at a slightly slower rate.

Cutek Wood Preservative is a specially formulated oil based timber preservative for interior and exterior use, designed to penetrate deeply into any species of timber, including hardwoods, to provide water repellency, and assist with dimensional stability.

Easily applied by almost anyone, Cutek Wood Preservative does not peel off or crack, but helps to control warping, cupping, and splitting; effectively enhancing the service life of timber.

This characteristic ensures that future recoat preparation consists of a simple wash-down of the timber, rather than conventional sanding or stripping, resulting in significant savings in ongoing maintenance costs and time.

Resistant to surface fungus and mould, Cutek Wood Preservative is suitable for use as a clear, water repellent preservative coating on exterior timber surfaces. Clear coated timber will lightly silver with age to produce a natural weathered appearance, while retaining its dimensional stability characteristics. If this natural silvering of the timber is undesirable, then colourtoned Cutek Wood Preservative must be used to delay the silvering process in addition to maintaining and enhancing the natural colour of freshly oiled timber.

Cutek Wood Preservative is suitable for use on a diverse range of recycled and sustainable timbers and timber products. This, coupled with its ease of use and numerous benefits, certainly represents a highly notable product.

Green star a first for Queensland

Energex have recently taken possession of their new, state of the art corporate headquarters, located in Brisbane’s inner city suburb of Newstead.

This innovative six-storey urban renewal development has been recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) having been awarded a 6 Star Green Star - Office Design v2 certified rating, the first award of this kind in Queensland.

With commercial buildings representing a significant impact on the environment, the GBCA introduced the ‘Green Star’ rating system. Established to evaluate overall environmental building design and construction, the Green Star system institutes a common set of standards in development of this kind.

Above all, the Green Star rating is creating an environmental awareness that is rapidly becoming a commercial imperative and not just a secondary consideration.

The wide use of certified premium recycled timber in the fit out was a key component in the building obtaining its 6 Star Green Star rating.

From its gleaming façade through to the energy, water and waste saving technology that lie under the skin, Energex is sure to shine on every level.

Representing a significant achievement in design, technology, and environmental awareness, this building sets a precedent for sustainability design and technology, not just in Australia but worldwide. A true landmark building with the global recognition afforded by its 6 Star Green Star rating.

WINNER- 2010 Australian Timber Design Awards

People’s Choice Award and National Winner of Public or Commercial Building

Eco sustainability and an innate convergence with the environment are key to the design success of a new kiosk, amenities building, boardwalk, and pergola at Regatta Foreshore (Toronto, NSW).

Constructed almost entirely from timber, chosen to echo the original boathouses and sheds that once lined the shores of the lake, the beautiful unforced buildings meld perfectly with their lakeside setting.

The inspired use of Kennedy’s recycled Ironbark, Turpentine and Tallowwood in these discreet structures absolutely glows when bathed in the natural sunlight.

Being of the same species as surrounding Eucalypts, the use of these timbers, only adds to the natural union with the environment.

With clean lines and the absence of noticeable projections, the buildings maintain a subdued and unassertive quality.

The rippled reflection of the warm timbers on the lake’s surface sets a tranquil stage for a perfect day out with the family.

Day Bukh, with a clear passion for designing buildings with sensitivity to the surrounding environment, were an excellent choice as architects for this development. Day Bukh were instrumental in their resolve to incorporate the chosen timbers over other options. Aside from the obvious visual appeal, their selection resided in the timber’s structural integrity, rich natural patina, and long term performance.

The successful design and scale of the buildings has resulted in an uninterrupted connection to the water, jetty and the existing bathing pools.

Rescue and Recovery Update

timber campaign scores a win

Kennedy’s is pleased to announce the campaign to extend the life of redundant timbers in Australia has scored a major win!

The Queensland Department of Public Works recently introduced a Recycling Policy for Buildings and Civil Infrastructure.

This new initiative outlines the requirement for the development of a resource (waste) recovery program for all recyclable materials in any significant government building, or form of infrastructure, that is being demolished or redeveloped.

It aims to promote sustainability in the built environment through the improved utilisation of resources, whilst reducing pressure on landfill waste sites.

This is the first time a ‘whole of government’ approach has been taken in relation to building material recycling.

A positive and encouraging step forward, the policy was launched on 1 July 2009 and reflects the spirit of Kennedy’s Rescue and Recovery Campaign.

To learn more check out the Winter and Spring2009 editions of AGAINST the Grain available to download from our website www.kennedysagedtimbers.com.au

freshwater boardwalk demolition

The removal of recycled timbers from a freshwater boardwalk in New Farm has paved the way for a third generation application.

Ten years ago, Kennedy’s supplied recycled timber to the original boardwalk project.

In response to a recent redevelopment, the surrounding structure demanded the timber be removed to accommodate for the new design.

Returning to the site a decade later, demolition license in hand, Kennedy’s staff carefully dismantled and removed the sturdy yet striking Ironbark and Spotted Gum timber.

Kennedy’s employ a fully qualified and experienced team of professionals, who work alongside demolition companies, maximising the amount of timber recovered from such projects.

Consistent with the Queensland Government’s new recycling policy the rescue and future reuse of this third generation timber demonstrates Kennedy’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

Originally salvaged from the HMAS Moreton Naval Complex this inspiring timber is now awaiting a new home whilst being reassessed on site at Kennedy’s Production Facility.
