beautiful blackbutt

The second chapter in our Timber Chronicles discusses one of the most common species of hardwood available on the commercial market; Blackbutt.

Blackbutt is the ideal timber for a wide variety of cladding, flooring and decking applications.

A popular choice for architects, builders and designers, Blackbutt is admired for its incredible durability and fire resistant properties. Perfect for large fit outs (e.g. shopping centres and high rise buildings) Blackbutt is a readily available and versatile timber.

A beautiful hardwood, Blackbutt presents a relatively straight and uniform grain with an appealing colour palette, ranging from cream to pale brown with a hint of pink.

Contemporary by nature, when freshly cut the truewood is pale brown with a hint of pink, whilst the sapwood (although sometimes indistinguishable from the truewood) is usually slightly paler in colour.

With a reputation for excellence, Kennedy’s Class One Durability Blackbutt is in high demand within the commercial building industry.

Our recycled Blackbutt is graded according to the Interim Industry Standards whilst our new certified Blackbutt is AFS approved (Australian Forestry Standard).

All products proudly boast the Kennedy’s stamp of sustainability.

Guaranteeing a rapid order-to-delivery turnaround, Kennedy’s offer an impressive range of recycled and sustainable Blackbutt timber products.

a new home for recycled timber

When owners Barry and Ros Roper decided to renovate, their primary goal was to achieve an open space with water views.

Located by the serene canals of Scarborough, their newly refurbished abode now showcases a fine selection of Kennedy’s recycled bridge timbers.

In desperate need of a facelift, the 12 year old structure was completely gutted in preparation for the extensive renovations.

Removing many of the 90’s trends (including archways and pink carpet) to make way for a contemporary plan, the inclusion of Kennedy’s recycled timbers has resulted in a stylish combination of old and new.

Designed by local Architect Peter Flannigan and Associates and built by Turnbull Constructions, the finished product is undeniably impressive.

The stunning bridge timbers, evaluated and tested by Kennedy’s expert staff, have been granted a second lease of life within the walls of this beautiful peninsula home.

An environmentally friendly alternative, Kennedy’s recycled timbers have a history all unto themselves.

To make them part of your future project contact the team at Kennedy’s.

Brisbane's latest commercial and retail precinct

There is nothing quite like the smell of timber.

Kennedy’s Green Star Timbers offer the ideal balance between superb building products and environmentally friendly credentials.

In high demand across the commercial building industry, Kennedy’s Green Star Timbers have helped shape Brisbane’s newest precinct, HQ.

Developed by Leighton Properties and designed by Bligh Voller Nield (BVN) this $330 million project is a chic addition to Brisbane’s burgeoning Fortitude Valley.

With 12 floors and 40,000sqm of office space, HQ also features a 3,000sqm retail area and pedestrian plaza, with plans for a boutique grocer, deli and high end restaurant in the pipeline.

Approached by Leighton Properties, Kennedy’s supplied over 5.3 kilometres of 125x18mm Grade RFG1 Classic Aged Recycled Blackbutt completing the internal floors, walls and ceiling cladding.

In addition to this 1.2 kilometres of Kennedy’s Grade RFG1 Classic Aged Recycled Blackbutt forms the tread and railings of the stunning staircases, designed by Arden Architectural.

BVN lead designer Rob Vider said “the project incorporates natural elements to capitalise on energy efficiency.”

A natural alternative to traditional building products, Kennedy’s Green Star Timbers complement the modern design and environmental criteria.

Commended for its sustainability achievements, HQ has been awarded a six star green rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

Launched in 2002, the GBCA is a national, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to developing a sustainable property industry for Australia by encouraging the adoption of green building practices.

It is uniquely supported by both industry and governments across the country.

The GBCA mission is to develop a sustainable property industry for Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions.

The GBCA philosophy is mirrored by the culture at Kennedy’s.

With a steadfast commitment to our mantra “where quality timber does not cost OUR Earth” the team at Kennedy’s share a common love for one colour; GREEN!

With quality recycled timber supplied on time and on budget, Kennedy’s is proud to have contributed to yet another Brisbane City signature project.

inventive designs for redundant power poles

Once deemed suitable for a single purpose, retired power poles are making a fashionable comeback within the timber industry.

After hearing about the commercial use of Kennedy’s recycled power poles, a local manual arts teacher was inspired to craft a masterpiece of his own.

Mr Peter Jendra (also a qualified patternmaker and photographer) combined his natural creativity and eye for detail to build a magnificent 3mx1.2m dining, boardroom table.

Now on display in Kennedy’s Showroom, this unique design not only includes redundant timber but also showcases the cross arms, braces, insulators and rustic wire of the poles.

The end result has produced a splendid structure, revealing the inner beauty and rich red grain of the enduring Iron Bark timber.

Michael Kennedy believes “in Peter’s skilled hands there is no such thing as unusable timber. He can turn a piece of timber as small as 12mmx12mmx100mm into a work of art or useful item.”

Approved and certified by the Green Building Council of Australia, Kennedy’s recycled power poles offer a variety of second life applications across a range of commercial and residential applications.

Our recut power poles have found a new lease of life within the Bell Tower of St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane, the flooring of the Federal Attorney General’s office in Canberra, the Tree of Knowledge memorial in Barcaldine, the Q150 replica windmill in Toowoomba and the recent refurbishment of Brisbane’s Norman Hotel.

In response to this demand, Kennedy’s have developed world class protocols and specialised handling for all redundant timber products.

This novel reuse of a timber product is what Kennedy’s is renowned for; innovative, professional and sustainable.

With an inventive spirit and raw talent to match, Peter has since discovered additional uses for Kennedy’s recycled power poles including timber pens, wall clocks, business card holders and presentation trophies.

Calling Kennedy's

telstra’s commitment to green building rings true

Showcasing one of the most impressive commercial uses of Kennedy’s recycled timber, the newly refurbished Telstra One Building dials up the style across Brisbane’s city skyline.

Officially opened late last year by Premier Anna Bligh and Telstra Chief Executive Officer Mr David Thodey, this multimillion dollar project houses the Queensland headquarters of Australia’s leading telecommunications company.

With 22 floors of specially dedicated space, the architect’s intention was to create a more open and collaborative culture for Brisbane’s Telstra team.

And Kennedy’s recycled Blackbutt takes centre stage as part of this contemporary blueprint.

Located at 275 George Street, this state of the art structure invokes a sense of style coupled with innovative functionality. Lining the internal walls and staircases, Kennedy’s timber highlights the versatility of recycled building products within a modern, commercial setting.

A focal point upon entry, the inspiring staircases capture your attention instantly. Designed by Arden Architectural Staircases, the ascending steps demonstrate the incredible character, colour and grain of Kennedy’s recycled Blackbutt.

Calling on Queensland companies to contribute was a key initiative of the project. “We have engaged a number of local businesses,” said Telstra CEO Mr Thodey.

Proud to be a nationally recognised, Queensland based company, Kennedy’s recycled products have again exceeded client expectations. Without compromising on quality, these eco friendly timbers shine in their new city central home.

Further testament to its environmental credentials, the Telstra One building has been awarded a five star green rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

Visit www. gbca.org.au to learn more about how you can benefit from choosing green star for your next building project.

Key contributors involved in the development of Telstra’s new Queensland headquarters included Bovis Lend Lease, United Group Services, Atlantis, Brisbane architects PDT, Arden Architectural Staircases and Kennedy’s Timbers.

why Kennedy's is an industry leader

With a reputation for excellence in product and service, Kennedy’s is renowned within the commercial building industry as a leading supplier of recycled and sustainable architectural timbers.

We source and supply only the very best.

With an extensive range of timber products on offer, coupled with a history of signature projects, Kennedy’s timbers are recognised for their premier quality, versatility and dependability.

And our turnaround time, from order to delivery, is second to none.

This is one of the many reasons why Kennedy’s was recently approached to resupply timber for a Brisbane Central Plaza 2 project.

Following inspection by an expert timber consultant, the original timber fitted (by another company) was deemed unsuitable for the new Queensland Investment Corporation building.

Difficulties had arisen with the initial installation as the ceiling, floor and stair boards were not in equilibrium with the ambient moisture levels of the internal air conditioning system.

Consequently, the consultant recommended Kennedy’s be approached to source and deliver replacement timber compatible for the fit out.

Within five business days of contact, Kennedy’s had delivered 2.5 kilometres of exquisite Blackbutt.

The application of Kennedy’s kiln dried, acclimatised timber has resulted in a space that is complete and appealing, befitting its surrounding environment.

Understanding the wide range of timber species available on the market and their varying uses is fundamental to the enduring success of timber applications.

Ensuring our staff are educated in the ‘school of timber’ is central to Kennedy’s ethos and success.

Kennedy’s is honoured to have taken part in a project that demanded the very best of our timber and our award winning team.

Grant’s Quiche

Ingredients:

  • 4 courgettes (zucchinis)
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 rashers of bacon
  • 1 cup of grated tasty cheese
  • 1 ½ cups of oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 tsp of baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chives (optional)

Method:

  • Slice courgettes, dice onion, cut bacon into small pieces
  • Lightly beat eggs and add all other ingredients, mix well
  • Place mixture into well oiled flan dish and cook for 40 minutes at 180c

You can use any vegetable in place of courgettes. Try spring onions, peas corn and so on. You can also add sliced tomato on top prior to cooking.

I like to chop a few chives and add to mixture.

Serve hot or cold, great with a nice green salad.

Bon Appétit!
