The Good Oil... an EzyDeck solution

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Timbachem is a specialist manufacturer of protective oils for timber.

With over 30 years experience in the development of oils for all types of timber, Timbachem products are considered to be among the best in the field. An Australian company, Timbachem boasts an international reputation exporting a sizeable quantity of products to Japan, South America, New Zealand, Europe and the USA.

Decking oils are a key part of the Timbachem product range. Research and development over many years has resulted in EzyDeck; a proven product for timber decking. When compared with other decking oils, EzyDeck offers longer life and excellent performance. Based on linseed oil, it nourishes decking and reduces splitting. Part of its secret lies with the particular UV filters applied during its manufacture.

EzyDeck is easy to apply and when recoated at regular intervals, it can be reapplied without sanding the deck. So why use an oil instead of a surface coating? Oils are easier to apply, they tend not to scuff or mark in high traffic areas and provide greater infiltration into the timber.

Kennedy’s recommends EzyDeck for deck finishings and maintenance.

EzyDeck is definitely the ‘Good Oil’ for decks!

timber campaign scores a win

Kennedy’s is pleased to announce the campaign to extend the life of redundant timbers in Australia has scored a major win!

The Queensland Department of Public Works recently introduced a Recycling Policy for Buildings and Civil Infrastructure.

This new initiative outlines the requirement for the development of a resource (waste) recovery program for all recyclable materials in any significant government building, or form of infrastructure, that is being demolished or redeveloped.

It aims to promote sustainability in the built environment through the improved utilisation of resources, whilst reducing pressure on landfill waste sites.

This is the first time a ‘whole of government’ approach has been taken in relation to building material recycling.

A positive and encouraging step forward, the policy was launched on 1 July 2009 and reflects the spirit of Kennedy’s Rescue and Recovery Campaign.

freshwater boardwalk demolition

The removal of recycled timbers from a freshwater boardwalk in New Farm has paved the way for a third generation application.

Ten years ago, Kennedy’s supplied recycled timber to the original boardwalk project.

In response to a recent redevelopment, the surrounding structure demanded the timber be removed to accommodate for the new design.

Returning to the site a decade later, demolition license in hand, Kennedy’s staff carefully dismantled and removed the sturdy yet striking Ironbark and Spotted Gum timber.

Kennedy’s employ a fully qualified and experienced team of professionals, who work alongside demolition companies, maximising the amount of timber recovered from such projects.

Consistent with the Queensland Government’s new recycling policy the rescue and future reuse of this third generation timber demonstrates Kennedy’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

Originally salvaged from the HMAS Moreton Naval Complex this inspiring timber is now awaiting a new home whilst being reassessed on site at Kennedy’s Production Facility.

recycled timber industry guidelines

Every industry requires a standard.

As the demand for recycled timber increases across commercial and residential projects within Australia, the need for an industry wide standard has never been more important.

The recently released Interim Industry Standard for Recycled Timber offers manufacturers, suppliers and users specific grading guidelines.

Published by the Forest and Wood Products Australia, the primary objective of the guidelines is to provide the Australian recycled timber industry with a professional, consistent standard.

The two guidelines available outline the requirements for visually grading recycled hardwood timber intended for Structural Use and Decorative Applications.

The guidelines address key points and considerations in addition to general, product and grading requirements.

Although green star and environmentally friendly buildings have long advocated for the use of recycled hardwood, this is the first time visual grading rules have been developed for recycled timber in Australia.

Kennedy’s is proud to have played a role in initiating, drafting and producing these timely documents.

All Kennedy’s recycled timbers are now graded and supplied according to the standards, with independent third party assessment available.

Our Timber Grading Team have become well versed in grading and hand selecting each piece of timber we supply to our valued clientele.

The guidelines are the perfect tool for every architect, designer and builder.

Kennedy’s encourages all within the industry to embrace the interim standard, ensuring a benchmark for quality for recycled timber consumers.

The Queensland Hotels Association awarded the Mango Hill Tavern the Best New Hotel/Tavern for 2009. Situated north of Brisbane, this contemporary venue incorporates Kennedy’s recycled Red Ironbark as part of its warm and welcoming design.

Inspired by stacks of wood from a lumber yard, the striking exposed beams form the basis of two bars, in addition to a prominent feature wall.

A modern space, the popular tavern offers patrons a place to dine and relax in style surrounded by a collection of Kennedy’s impressive salvaged timbers.

Woody Point Jetty Reconstruction

IPWEAQ Excellence Award 2009

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia Queensland recently recognised the reconstruction of the Woody Point Jetty. The only recipient to receive an Excellence Award for projects less than $5 million, the judges commented that “whilst using the latest modern materials, it has achieved a heritage appearance through the use of recycled timber decking.”

Rebuilt using Kennedy’s recycled timber sourced primarily from the old Mackay Wharf, this 80 year old wood now lays ground to a fresh, multipurpose structure fit for local residents, visitors and fishing enthusiasts.

Essentially Residential

a Hervey Bay masterpiece

A private residence near the shores of Dundowran Beach in Queensland has captured the essence of contemporary living, entertainment and style.

With an east, west and central wing, this spacious home presents an exceptional display of Kennedy’s recycled timber.

Designed by Anthony Nelson, in consultation with the owners, the modern structure contains 34 pieces of feature timber gracing the front entrance and outdoor living space.

Appointed to assist the project with its signature finishes, Michelle Clark of Essentially Residential suggested and sourced the wood stating “Kennedy’s offer the best in recycled timber available.”

Michelle also said “the design feel and aesthetics evolved around the timber, giving it strength of character, beauty and history.”

Testament to the design, recycled bricks from an old kiln were also applied to the wood fire pizza base, complementing the surrounding recycled timber beams and posts.

Settling into their splendid new home with ease and excitement, the owners are delighted with the finished product; one where contemporary meets classic, culminating in a distinctive abode.

Having previously worked with Kennedy’s on several projects, Essentially Residential boasts an impressive history of innovative projects and awards, including the Housing Industry of Australia (HIA) House of the Year.
